1. Role Summary

The Endpoint Engineer owns endpoint and mobile security: the operating system baselines, the endpoint detection and response platform, the mobile device management controls, and the device posture signal that feeds network and access decisions. They ensure that every device accessing CERG-protected resources, whether corporate-managed or BYOD, meets a defined security baseline.

4. Key Responsibilities

4.1 Core Responsibilities (All Grades)

  • Design, implement, and maintain endpoint security baselines for Windows, macOS, and Linux - Govern the endpoint detection and response (EDR) platform: agent deployment, policy tuning, alert triage, and investigation support - Own mobile device management (MDM) and mobile threat defense (MTD) configuration - Define and enforce device posture requirements for conditional access (patch level, disk encryption, firewall status, EDR health) - Manage endpoint configuration drift: detect, report, and remediate deviations from the baseline - Contribute to the Endpoint and Mobile Security Standard and maintain its technical requirements - Support the Secure Configuration Baseline Standard with endpoint-specific hardening guidance - Investigate endpoint-compromise scenarios: malware execution, credential theft, lateral movement from compromised endpoints - Partner with IT operations on endpoint deployment, patching, and lifecycle management

10. Success Profile

An Endpoint Engineer is successful when every managed device is a controlled, defensible platform regardless of its location or user. Key indicators: endpoint configuration drift is detected and remediated automatically within hours; EDR coverage is complete with zero stale agents; patch compliance for critical vulnerabilities exceeds 95% within the defined window; mobile and remote devices are indistinguishable from office devices in their security posture. The engineer’s work is measured in coverage percentage and response time, not tickets closed.

11. Career Path

11.1 Within-Family Progression

Within JF-SECENG, Endpoint Engineer progression normally follows L1 Associate Engineer/S1, L2 Engineer/S2, and L3 Senior Engineer/S3 per JF-001 §9.1. The role-specific terminal grade is S3 in JA-001 §7.2. Continued growth beyond S3 generally requires broadening into a cross-domain Engineering Advisor role, transitioning into Cloud Security Engineering or another adjacent engineering specialty, or moving to the Management track. Promotion evidence should show endpoint control ownership, measurable hardening outcomes, automation of endpoint operations, and effective partnership with Risk and Governance.


11.2 Cross-Family Movement

11.3 Management Track Option

At L3+ (SME track), a Management track option may be available per CERG-GOV-JA-001 §8.1 (SME to Management Transition). Readiness indicators include: consistently sought out for guidance by junior team members, leading cross-functional initiatives without formal authority, and communicating clearly with non-technical stakeholders. The transition is a track change, not a grade promotion — an S3 Advisor moving to M1 Manager carries their technical credibility into the management role.
