## 1. Role Summary

The Detection Engineer owns detection-rule authoring, MITRE ATT&CK coverage, and the detection tuning lifecycle. They turn threat intelligence, vulnerability data, and red team findings into detection content that finds adversaries before the adversary achieves their objective. They are the bridge between knowing what threats exist and being able to see them in the environment.

## 10. Success Profile

A Detection Engineer is successful when the organization detects malicious activity before it causes material harm. Key indicators: detection coverage maps to the MITRE ATT&CK framework with measurable gaps identified and prioritized; alert-to-investigation time is trending down; false positive rates for production detection rules are below 5%; detection rules are tested against known adversary behavior before deployment. The engineer's detections catch real threats while generating noise only when the security team should actually pay attention.

### 11.1 Within-Family Progression

Within JF-RISKOPS, progression follows the Risk Operations level ladder in [JF-001 §9.2](../CERG-GOV-JF-001_Job_Families_Overview.md#92-jf-riskops--risk-operations-levels): L1 Associate Analyst/S1, L2 Analyst/S2, L3 Senior or Lead Analyst/S3, and L4 Principal Analyst/S4.
